A company loved your CV and you have landed an interview – great, a new opportunity could be on the horizon!

It is very easy to get overwhelmed with excitement and relief when you secure an interview – we’re all guilty of it; however, what if the company just isn’t a good fit for you?

This is something we should all, but often forget to consider.

The interview is a perfect opportunity for you to ask questions that will give you a great insight into the company’s culture, values and ambitions, and will ultimately help you determine whether the company will be a good fit for you. So, what kind of questions should you be asking?

What are your company’s short and long term goals?

Don’t be afraid to ask direct questions like this. Not only is it important for your future to know where the company plans to go, but you will probably impress with your keen interest in the development of the business.

A question like this will also allow you to assess whether the company shares the same attitude and work ethics that you do.

How would you describe your company’s culture?

It is important to establish whether the company will work for you from a culture perspective, after all, you are going to be spending a lot of your time there. The work place needs to be one that you enjoy.

If you prefer a more relaxed working environment where you manage your own time and are trusted to work independently, you will likely regret accepting a role within a corporate business that prefers to micromanage.

What are my opportunities for progression?

Knowing that the company can offer you the opportunity to learn and develop your skills will play a huge part in the selection process.

Depending on ambitions, everyone’s idea of progression will differ, so be sure to lay these out in the interview and make sure that you and the interviewer are on the same page.

How will my performance be monitored?

This is a great question to ask as it will not only allow you to manage your own expectations, but it will also give you a good understanding of what will be expected of you i.e. whether there will be targets that you need to hit etc.

Although the job market is slowly recovering, competition for jobs remains high; however, this shouldn’t mean that you settle for a less than adequate company that doesn’t suit you. If the company doesn’t work for you, try somewhere else. You’ll only end up regretting your decision to accept a role within the wrong company.
