5 Ways To Shop For Candidates On Mobile This Holiday Season

Given that it’s no longer an employer’s market, and quality candidates are being approached by several companies, it’s become more important than ever to reach out to candidates in the most convenient way for them. In this piece, Robyn Melhuish from MedReps.com explores ways that you can implement mobile into your recruiting strategy to reap big rewards.

As the holidays draw near, mobile shopping is at an all-time high. Last year was declared the “year of mobile” with a study finding 90 percent of smartphone users accessed e-commerce websites on mobile.

As shopping increases around holiday time, recruiting efforts tend to decline. The holidays might not seem like a good time for recruiting, but you can still find great talent during this busy season using everyone’s favorite shopping tool: the mobile phone.

Just as mobile conveniences have changed the way we shop, they also can change the way we seek out talent. A recent Jobvite study shows 51 percent of recruiters plan to increase their investment in mobile recruiting in 2015. As recruiters fine-tune their mobile recruiting techniques, recruiting talent will become more competitive.

Here are a few creative ways you can stay ahead of the competition in using your mobile device to find the perfect candidates to fill positions this holiday season:

1. Scope out candidates on niche job boards, then check them out on social apps.

Candidates are getting clever. You can visit plenty of general job boards and find candidates with irrelevant experience they’ve crafted to sound relevant to a position. Their resumes may be filled with exaggerations and “fluff.” In fact, nearly half of all resumes submitted contain some false information.

To cut down on the candidates without relevant experience, stick to finding talent on industry-specific job apps. For example, if you’re looking to hire a pharmaceutical sales rep, try scoping out a job board for medical sales professionals. My company conducted a survey and found 83 percent of our members have industry experience.

Then, you can check the candidate's social media profiles for consistency in experience on his or her resume. For example, use the LinkedIn app to check for recommendations and endorsements to ensure all claims on the resume add up.

2. Search hashtags to find candidates with #skill.

Hashtags are often used to search for content posted relating to events, places, or ideas. They can also be used to find engaged users by specific topics or interests. Use the search function on social media sites to search keywords and hashtags that describe the skills and interests of your ideal candidate.

For example, if you’re hiring for the healthcare industry, try #pharma, #medsales, or simply #healthcare. You can also join a tweet chat such as #JobHuntChat which connects recruiters and talent.

3. Share and write useful articles on your professional networking sites.

Write compelling content about topics your organization specializes in and publish them on a company blog, website, or social publishing platform. Generally, candidates who share interest in the topics you write about will begin to follow you and comment on your pieces. You can publish and manage all aspects of this on-the-go using mobile.

If you like specific followers’ ideas, don’t be afraid to engage them in more conversations to find out where they are at in their career and what aspirations they have moving forward. One of them could be a great fit for your company.

4. Create a Vine account and make fun videos.

Talented candidates are in high demand and usually find themselves with a few offers on the table. The factors that help them choose reach far beyond job function. Candidates want to work at a place that inspires and resonates with them. Companies that show off a fun and attractive culture have a higher chance of attracting talent they seek.

For example, Aviary used Vine to advertise open positions and show off current employees’ quirky personalities. The Weather Channel used this vine to show off a behind the scenes look at the company.

Create a Vine account and start showing off some of what the companies you are recruiting for have to offer.

5. Host a contest on social media.

The use of gamification in recruiting is not new, but mobile certainly makes it easier to manage contests on social media. Host a contest to attract the talent you are looking for. For example, if you are hiring for a sales position, ask contestants to tweet the best sales pitch they can come up with at you by a specific deadline. Winner can receive a gift card, or even a chance to interview.

The holidays are an excellent time to recruit new talent, especially using mobile. During this part of the season, it seems everyone spends more time on their phones connecting with friends and family, and of course, shopping. So meet talented candidates where they’re at -- on mobile.
