A Quick Guide to Hiring the Best Staff

Every successful business owner knows that in order to get to the top of any given sector you need to have a great team behind you every step of the way. Without the best staff on your side, competing against your business rivals can become an uphill battle and it is a common reason why so many companies flounder.

So, what can you do to ensure that you always employ the best talent available? While there are never any guarantees when dealing with individuals, there are one or two things that you can do that will help you attract a better class of applicant. Let’s take a look at them:

Create interest

Simply placing an ad in the back of the local paper isn’t going to cut it anymore, especially if you are a small business. You need to make the job attractive in order to draw in the best staff.

Be innovative about how you advertise and embrace modern media as well as the more traditional routes. This will give your company a broader reach, allowing your position to be seen by more people, which will ultimately give you greater choice.

Draw on your own contacts

Too often, business owners neglect the contacts that have already made when it comes to recruiting. While your contacts may not be the right people to fill the role, they may well know someone who can, so why not ask? It might just come to pass that your perfect candidate is somewhere within your own contact list.

Seek out forward thinking candidates

When you are at the interview stage it is worth asking one or two leading questions that attempt to bring out your prospective candidates levels of ambition. Candidates that demonstrate a strong desire to achieve and get on within your company are a solid bet, but the ones that shows a willingness to learn in order to move up the ranks are the true gems.

Training people in-house can be more effective than employing highly qualified personnel, and cheaper too. A good HR software suite will make scheduling the training a breeze, ensuring that your new recruit is receiving the right tuition at the right time. Bringing in already established people can help inject urgency into your company, but training for the long term will always deliver the best results.

Post-interview trials

Once you’ve found the person that you consider to be perfect for the role it may still be beneficial for both parties if a trial period is offered. This will allow you to assess the way that they fit in with the rest of the team and give your other employees the chance to air any concerns that they may have. Always listen to your workers, they may have picked on something that you have missed in the interview process and their insight can be invaluable.

The length of time you offer as a trial period is entirely up to you, but it shouldn’t drag on for months and months. Set clear parameters and speak regularly with the candidate – their opinion is just as important to you as anyone else’s.
