How To Future-Proof Your Career.

I'm a big fan of Daniel Priestley's Key Person Of Influence book (not an affiliate link or otherwise self-serving plug, I simply find his work valuable and am happy to share it).

He describes what work will look like in the future and for him, it's both fragmented and exciting.

I tend to agree with, and am inspired by his take on it.

He makes a point that to become one of the most valued and highly paid people in your industry tomorrow, you need to:

  1. Be able to effectively communicate what you do
  2. Gain credibility by publishing your ideas and, consequently..
  3. Raise your social media profile
  4. Turn what you know into a job/product/service
  5. Connect with others to facilitate work and business opportunities

What Does It Mean?

Boiled down to the essentials, it means that career success is a function of being great at doing something specific and being well-connected. This is hardly ground breaking; people have known that for years.

What I find new, however, is the emergence of social media (and Internet in general) as a vehicle through which you achieve that.

Resumes Are Still Very Important Today.

Most hiring processes still involve some kind of resume request and presentation.

And there will always be jobs and industries which resist change, which means the humble resume is not entirely disappearing any time soon.

But a lot of jobs - and many jobs which you really want, will be contested in the social online space a few years from now. And people who have done the groundwork today will be the ones who'll reap the rewards then.

What are you going to do today to invest in your career tomorrow?

It Doesn't Require Much.

What you need to be the most, is consistent. I challenge you to create a new habit and do a little bit of work on your online presence every day.

Give some thought to what your niche is (a.k.a. what problem in the world you'd like to solve). Reach out to someone and write a guest blog post. Contribute to a G+ group with some original ideas. Write a blog post on your personal blog.

I'm About To Go For A Run.

It's something that I find very hard to make myself do.

It's especially hard because I'm just getting back into it and I well, suck. I run out of breath, everything aches, your know - the usual story.

But I've made myself do it, consistently, for the past 2 weeks and I'm starting to see results, which means getting out the house is becoming easier.

Your Online Presence Is Exactly The Same.

At the begining, it seems like a problem that's so big, that there's no point even trying to tackle it.

But over time dots connect, people you never expected to know you touch bases and opportunities fall into your lap. You begin to see that, bit by bit, you've created a different future for your career. It's more secure and more exciting.
